  20. <p>    Where else would a baby boomer's memoir play begin but at
  21. a high school sock hop? The smartest girl in class sits alone,
  22. of course, equally terrified that no one will ask her to dance
  23. or that someone may. Where would the action predictably jump to
  24. next but a combined college mixer and "Clean for Gene" McCarthy
  25. rally? What way stations are then more obligatory than a
  26. protest, a consciousness-raising session, a TV talk show and a
  27. mistrustfully viewed "ladies' lunch"?
  28. </p>
  29. <p>    As a portrait of a generation, Wendy Wasserstein's new play
  30. is more documentary than drama, evoking fictionally all the
  31. right times and places but rarely attaining much thorny
  32. particularity about the people who inhabit them. The plot, such
  33. as it is, often seems like an unconscious cartoon of feminist
  34. dialectic. Two men stay close to the title character through the
  35. years: a pediatrician who is handsome, earnest, dedicated, kind,
  36. politically correct from a left-wing perspective and
  37. irreversibly gay, and a heterosexual who is grasping, impatient,
  38. domineering, shallow, as undependable as quicksilver and, for
  39. Heidi, sexually irresistible. This is the there-are-no-men
  40. lament reduced to a greeting card. The saving grace is Joan
  41. Allen in the title role. Winner of a Tony Award last year in
  42. Burn This, Allen becomes a strong contender to repeat with a
  43. performance that displays much the same virtues: an inviting
  44. vulnerability, an approach to romance simultaneously fragile
  45. and fearless, a wit at once acerbic and diffident. While
  46. Wasserstein (Isn't It Romantic?) has written mostly whiny and
  47. self-congratulatory cliches for the surrounding characters, she
  48. has given Heidi -- or Allen has found -- a complex, self-aware
  49. and poignant life.
